St Edmund's College Ware Learning Centre
In the summer of 2022 NBA were approved by St Edmunds College to investigate the options for developing a Learning Centre in the grounds of their multi-grade I to II listed building campus. Within 6 months we had designed the proposed building and obtained both planning and listed listed building consent. Four months later the design is out to tender with a view to starting on site within 11 months.
The approx 300m2 building provides additional classrooms, one to one rooms, offices and a much needed new bespoke drama room for the College. Key to the design of this project was the ability for it to augment the existing educational provision of the school whilst also fitting in with the historic architectural composition of buildings started in 1793.
The original brick buildings partially formed a quadrangle that had not been completed. This new building was to act as the completion of the original masterplan but also needed to fit 3 levels into a volume that historically would only have had 2. this was achieved following a rigorous and selective design process with Heritage Consultants BEAMS. The resulting extension to the school was promoted by East Herts Conservation team as a positive contribution to a valuable and varied historic environment.
